Discovery Pangkor Island
Pangkor Island, is an island off the coast of Perak in north-west peninsular Malaysia,
reached by ferry from Lumut. It is one of the most famous and well known islands
in Malaysia. Located approximately 90 km southwest of Ipoh, is a relatively small
island with total surface area of about 8km2. In 2005 its total population was approximately
25,000 islanders. It is heavily promoted as a tourist destination by the Perak government.
Fishing and fish products are the major industries, famous for its anchovies and
squids.
We speak now of Pangkor as one island but in fact there are nine islands
in the direct surrounding. Pangkor and Pangkor Laut are the two biggest and the
only two inhabited by humans.
Historically, Pangkor was a refuge for local fishermen,
merchants and pirates. In the 17th century, the Dutch built a fort in an effort
to control the Perak tin trade. In 1874, it was the location of a historic treaty
between a contender to the Perak throne and the British government (The Pangkor
Treaty), which began the British colonial domination of the Malay Peninsula.
The
main island of Pangkor is mainly populated by fisherfolk who occupy the eastern
coastline. On the islands there's a variety of wildlife while the smaller atols
are basically white sand beaches and rocks. According to some legends there were
even tigers living on this small island!
Pangkor Island is an idyllic and beautiful
island resort for a carefree and relaxing holiday. Its natural scenery of green
hills and palm-fringed beaches of fine white sand lapped by the warm blue waters
of the Straits of Malacca is truly magnificent. Pangkor is famous for its fine beaches
and a mix of low budget to 5 star accommodations.
